Abstract: A wide variety of “Analysis” has been developed and applied to every area of science since the introduction of differentiation by Newton and Leibniz. However, the emergence of “fractals” as models of natural objects and phenomena has raised the question of how we can tackle analysis on spaces that are nowhere smooth. For example, typical self-similar sets, such as the Sierpinski gasket and carpet, do not possess a differential structure; hence, it is difficult to apply analyses based on differentiation. Based on this question, studies on analysis on fractals began in the late 1980s with the pioneering works of Goldstein, Kusuoka, and Barlow-Perkins who constructed the Brownian motion on the Sierpinski gasket. In this talk, I will review some of the progress made toward analyzing (non-smooth) metric spaces, specifically the construction of Sobolev spaces and Brownian motions.
——————————

Magic angles are a hot topic in condensed matter physics: when two sheets of graphene are twisted by those angles the resulting material is superconducting. I will present a very simple operator whose spectral properties are thought to determine which angles are magical. It comes from a recent Physical Review Letter by Tarnopolsky–Kruchkov–Vishwanath. The mathematics behind this is a blend of representation theory (of the Heisenberg group in characteristic three), Jacobi theta functions and spectral instability of non-self-adjoint operators (involving Hörmander’s bracket condition in a simple setting). The results will be illustrated by colourful numerics which suggest some open problems. This is joint work with S. Becker, M. Embree, and M. Zworski.

Aperiodic Order is the term used to discuss often geometric phenomena which are not perfectly symmetric, yet have strong global structure and often approximate symmetries. The most well known examples are the aperiodic tilings of Penrose and others: tilings of the plane that never repeat, yet are highly structured and very far from being random.

Malliavin-Sokorohod calculus for canonical Lévy processes with applications

In this talk, we deal Malliavin-Sokorohod (MS, in short) calculus for canonical Lévy processes with applications, especially mathematical finance. MS calculus is a set of mathematical techniques and ideas that extend the mathematical field of calculus of variations from deterministic functions to stochastic processes. In particular, it allows the computation of ‘’derivatives” of random variables, such as functionals for Lévy processes, stochastic integrals and stochastic differential equations. MS calculus is also called the stochastic calculus of variations.

The first half of the presentation, we introduce MS calculus for canonical Lévy processes. Especially, we use chaos expansion, derivative operator and increment quotient difference operator for Lévy functionals. Calculations tools about MS calculus are also introduced. By using the results, we next derive a new modified $\Phi$-Sobolev type inequalities for canonical Lévy processes and we also derive concentration inequalities. Moreover, asymptotic estimates for their inequality will be given.

The second half of the presentation will address issues to mathematical finance. In particular, we consider locally risk minimizing hedging strategies, a typical hedging technique in incomplete markets. The presentation will introduce a method using Malliavin analysis, which provides a concrete expression formula and can be applied to numerical analysis and other practical problems. The use of Malliavin analysis provides concrete expression formulas, which can be applied to numerical analysis and other practical applications.

In the remaining time, we will discuss future prospects.
